Description

Castlemaine Primary School No 119 – 150 Years, 1855 – 2005. The reaching of the 150th anniversary of a school indicates a massive journey full of many riches, sadness, diversions of interest, an extensive range of talented people (both students and teachers) and many an anecdote to trigger a fond memory or a belly aching laugh. This superbly produced book provides the 150 year journey of Castlemaine Primary School to this point in time. It shares with us the riches of every aspect of the history of the school and school life. Imagine the challenges the first students and staff had to overcome in 1855 – a tent, dirt floors, indifferent weather conditions, poor equipment, very large classes and a shifting population because of the search for gold. The situation would have improved slightly with the two big classrooms in the Norman style National school built in 1856 but on the other hand teaching a class of 60 plus students would have been very challenging. The school then moved into the current permanent building in 1875. Compiled by Gail Woodhouse.
