The original “Souvenir of Castlemaine and District” was published by Verey & Co in 1904. It was printed by the Periodicals Publishing Company, 21 Elizabeth Street in Melbourne. As the cover suggests, the original contained “26 Photographic Views” – taken around th district by Adolphus Verey. However – this little book contains 22 images. This copy reproduces a selection of the original Verey images and re-captured the images as it is today (where possible). Images included are: The original front cover; Mostyn Street, from Barker Street – looking east; Barker Street, from Mostyn Street – looking north; The main gates of the Botanical Gardens, Walker Street; A view of the Botanical Gardens and Lake Joanna; Barkers Creek and the Walker Street Bridge; The Patterson Memorial on the south east corner of Barker and Mostyn Streets; Straede’s Drapery Emporium, Market Square (Mostyn Street); Geo. Clarke & Son, Barker Street; Mr Langslow’s home in McGrath Street, Wesley Hill – wrecked by a cyclone and rebuilt; Town View – Castlemaine looking west from Templeton Street East; Railway Station, Kennedy Street; The original back cover.
