Description
Thompsons’ Foundry has played a pivotal role in the economic sustainability and wellbeing of Castlemaine since it first opened its doors in1875. It would be surprising to find a family in town that hasn’t at some point had a member working there. Our family connection with the Foundry spanned 117 years. Starting with my great grandmothers’ brother John Leaney, who was the firms first apprentice in 1875, and finished with my father, who retired in 1992. But the Foundry wasn’t just a major employer in Castlemaine, with no less than three separate sporting teams and one of this country’s oldest brass bands. The Foundry has contributed to the social, cultural and sporting fabric of this town like few others. This book is not meant to be an history of the Foundry sporting clubs but merely a collection of photographs and pieces of memorabilia relating to the Foundry Football and Cricket teams.
